Quick Update on TROOP 7192!

Hi everyone! Sorry for the delay in posts - so much is going on right now with the United Way Campaign, which is really keeping me hopping during the daytime.

I have to say I am so excited for this year and such a great group of girls! The first meeting was a little bit of chaos and a lot of fun!  We had some great help there thanks to two Cadette helpers - Korrie Kennedy and Megan Rose.  The older girls enjoyed teaching the younger ones some daisy songs.  We talked about what it is to be a daisy, recited the Girl Scout promise, planned for our upcoming hiking trip and made a fun snack for our trip too!

I have all of the forms finally turned in and have turned them over to our service unit leader.  Your checks should be cashed soon - and I opened our Daisy troop account as well at Educational Credit Union with our troop dues to get us started.  We have about 1/2 of the girls' dues in, so if you haven't done it yet, please bring it soon so we have a little money to keep the fun going until the cookie money comes in.

And, onto cookies! Sales begin this Saturday.  If you would like to get started this weekend, just send me an email or give me a call (785) 817.2633.  I've made myself available between noon and 1 p.m. at my home for you to sign permission slips and pick up the cookie forms.  There is no minimum, but please do not allow your scout to go door to door.  Safety is the most important thing!

Cookies cost $3.50 / box.  We do not collect any money upfront.  We will turn the forms into Martha (our cookie mom!) during our November meeting on the 18th - so SELL, SELL, SELL!!!

Many of you are getting the vests and smocks - if you want to order anything with the troop number 7192.  Thanks for everything you do and for allowing your daughter to be a part of scouting!

Permission Slips

Please use the following verbiage in a note and send with your scout to the school office so they can stay afterschool and participate!  Remember our first meeting is coming up fast - Wednesday October 20.  I'm missing a few forms still and need to get the $12 Registration fee (payable by check) so I can turn everyone in and get our troop official!  Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Meeting Information

The Tecumseh South First Grade Daisy Scout Troop will meet on the Third Wednesday of every month after school until 5 p.m. Parents do not need to be present at meetings (we scheduled them at this time for this very reason - to give the girls an opportunity to participate despite their busy family's schedules).

We will meet in the basement of the school.  Permission forms from parents will be sent out which allow the girls to stay after school.

We will also rotate snack duty.  I will take care of the first snacks on October 20.  A list of assigned snacks and dates will go out soon (and yes, I will remind parents of when they are on snack duty!).

Daisy Gear

Many Daisies opt to purchase or make the official tunic or vest.  Either one is fine for your Daisy, but it is not required to have.

When we start placing badges, there is a proper way to place them.  Select here to link to the uniform placement PDF

View and order your girl scout uniform and gear online (don't worry, we'll provide the patches!).  Select here to view the online catalog.

I also understand there is a local store.  I'll post info on that as soon as I receive it! Having the tunic or vest isn't required, but it is nice to have when we participate in girl scout activities as a troop and for the girls to wear and show off at school on scout days.  If you have questions, would like a pattern to make one (or would like to volunteer to help make them for the girls) please let me know.

Michelle and I can be reached via email at girlscoutsforlife@gmail.com.

Thank you! Jamie

All about Daisies

Why are they called "Daisies?"

The nickname of the Girl Scouts founder, Juliette Gordon Low, was "Daisy", which explains why this age group is called Daisy Scouts. Juliette's birthday was on Halloween, and she loved animals and enjoyed traveling around the world.

What are Daisy Scout Petals?

Each Daisy Girl Scout will work toward completing her "daisy" by learning about each petal. The center of the Daisy represents the Girl Scout Promise. In addition, there are ten petals representing different values and goals, including:
  • Light Blue: Honest and Fair
  • Yellow: Friendly and Helpful
  • Spring Green: Considerate and Caring
  • Red: Courageous and Strong
  • Orange: Be Responsible for What I Say and Do
  • Purple: Respect Myself and Others
  • Magenta: Respect Authority
  • Green: Use Resources Wisely
  • Rose: Make the World a Better Place
  • Violet: Be a Sister to Every Girl Scout
Each meeting will be dedicated to earning a petal. Our troops goal is to complete our "Daisy" by earning a petal patch for each area.

Many Daisies opt to wear the Daisy Apron or Tunic. Making or purchasing this is completely up to you.  If you choose to have your daughter wear the apron, she can bring or wear it to school on Daisy days.  We will send patches home as they are completed for you to iron on.

If you elect not to purchase a tunic or vest, that's fine too, but I suggest you have something for your Daisy to put her patches on and create her patch.  A square of fabric works great and can even be made into a pillow after they bridge to the next level (Brownies).

Our goal this year is to have fun, create long lasting friendships and understand what it is to be a good girl scout!  I will be attending a Leader training on October 6 and am also getting a Daisy handbook to help plan fun events for the girls.  Michelle, my co-leader, and I could use some extra parent volunteer for a couple of projects - if your time is such you can help, it won't take long and will mean a lot to us!

Currently, we are seeking a parent to manage the coordinate the Cookie Sales.  This begins in November with orders and they are distributed with money collected in January.  We would also appreciate it if we could have someone help manage the Daisy finances.  If you are into balancing checkbooks, this is the job for you!

Whatever your commitment level, thanks for being involved in scouts!  It's a great way to provide a positive experience for your daughter.  As a child scout myself, I can honestly say some of my favorite memories where in Girl Scouts - I hope we can do the same for your daughter.

Thank you!
Jamie Hornbaker
